Tells the history of how Jews from many backgrounds made their way to Shanghai (initially from Spain and Arab countries, then Russia and Poland…). In 1942, rumours were circulated about measures to be soon taken against Jews in Shanghai. In 1943, the Japanese ordered all non-citizens to move to Hongkou District. Even though the order did not mention “Jews” or “Ghetto”, everyone knew that Jews would be sent to something similar to a ghetto. The order was carried out viciously and the Jews lived in constant fear that the already horrible situation will get worse. In 1944, German experts in killing Jews arrived in Shanghai. Despite the persecutions, the social and cultural life developed. Educational institutions were built, incuding Bais Yaakov for girls. With the end of the war, the Jews started to leave Shanghai and by the end of 1949, 10,000 Jews have already left. As persecution against Jews continued in China, they all returned to Israel.
