This photo of the Bais Yaakov Seminary in Czernowitz (founded in 1935 by Esther Gross (later Hamberger) shows a group of students and two teachers in the snow. Esther Gross, who was still in her twenties, is the second on the right; another teacher, Froylein Hinde Landau, from Bukovina, is fifth from the right, facing to her left. The school, which rented an apartment for use as a dormitory and which ate most meals at a nearby restaurant, required students to go for a walk, in all kinds of weather, each afternoon.
